Job Description
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a key executive responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administrative and operational functions of a company. The COO works closely with the CEO and other senior leaders to ensure that the company’s operations align with its strategic goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Planning and Execution
Operational Strategy Development: Develop and implement operational strategies that align with the company’s overall strategic objectives.
Long-term Planning: Collaborate with the CEO and other executives to set long-term goals and develop plans to achieve them.
Policy Formulation: Create and enforce operational policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure consistent and efficient business operations.
Operational Management
Daily Operations Oversight: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the company, ensuring that all departments are running efficiently and effectively.
Process Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in operational processes and implement strategies to enhance productivity and efficiency.
Resource Allocation: Manage the allocation and utilization of resources, including human, financial, and physical assets, to maximize operational effectiveness.
Leadership and Team Management
Leadership Development: Provide leadership and direction to senior management and department heads, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Talent Management: Oversee recruitment, training, and development of staff to ensure the company has the talent needed to achieve its goals.
Performance Management: Set performance standards and metrics for departments and employees, monitor performance, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
Financial Management
Budgeting and Financial Planning: Develop and manage the company’s budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and operational needs.
Cost Management: Monitor and control operational costs to ensure financial efficiency and profitability.
Financial Reporting: Provide regular financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors, highlighting operational performance and financial health.
Risk Management and Compliance
Risk Assessment: Identify operational risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
Compliance Oversight: Ensure that the company complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
Crisis Management: Lead the company’s response to operational crises and emergencies, ensuring minimal disruption to business activities.
Customer and Stakeholder Relations
Customer Satisfaction: Ensure that the company’s operations are geared towards delivering high-quality products and services that meet customer expectations.
Stakeholder Communication: Maintain effective communication with key stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, and partners, to support business objectives.
Partnership Development: Identify and establish strategic partnerships that can enhance operational capabilities and business growth.
Innovation and Technology
Technology Integration: Oversee the implementation of technology solutions that improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.
Innovation Management: Foster a culture of innovation within the operations team, encouraging the adoption of new ideas and approaches.
Digital Transformation: Lead initiatives to digitally transform the company’s operations, leveraging data and technology to drive business success.
Reporting and Accountability
Operational Reporting: Regularly report on operational performance to the CEO and Board of Directors, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
Performance Metrics: Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of operations and identify areas for improvement.
Accountability Systems: Establish systems of accountability to ensure that all departments and employees are meeting their operational targets and objectives.
Qualifications and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field required
A Master’s Degree or MBA strongly preferred
Professional certifications, such as Project Management Professional (PMP) or
Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) is an added advantage.
Minimum of 10 years of executive experience
In-depth understanding of the industry including risk management and compliance.
In-depth understanding of accounting principles including budgeting, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and capital planning management
Demonstrated strategic leadership ability
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
High level thinking and problem-solving ability
Excellent leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and personal integrity
Understanding of advanced business planning and regulatory issues
Solid grasp of data analysis and performance metrics
