About the Organisation
The MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for research and training. The Unit was established in 1988 to improve the understanding and control of the HIV epidemic in Uganda and globally, following a request from the Uganda Government to the United Kingdom (UK) Government. After wide consultations, and in response to the changing public health landscape, Unit work has broadened beyond HIV to include other infections, neglected, endemic, emerging and re-emerging infections and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Job Description
The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts
Duties and Responsibilities
Implementation and day to day activities of the research projects in close collaboration with clinical staff and study investigators ensuring efficient processes are instigated and followed.
Trace for participants who are eligible for recruitment
Provide education and awareness to study participants and communities
Administer the study information sheet and consent forms to study participants
Assist in data collection from patients, taking of bio-physical measurements, histories and data entry into the study databases and instigation of systems to organise and manage this data collection in accordance with regulatory standards and project timelines
Administer Investigational agent (Oral glucose) to study participants and collect blood samples in a timely manner while adhering to SOPs.
Administer other investigational agents (Dextrose 20%, IV Arginine)
Provide basic medical care to study participants
Ensure appropriate sample collection, handling, timely processing, transportation to the laboratory and storage as per study protocol
Conduct of clinical research to ensure consistency and adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and all applicable regulatory requirements
Track laboratory results and take appropriate action.
Offer relevant health education to the study participants.
Provide counselling to clients when needed.
Ensure proper documentation and adherence to the study protocol
Give out transport reimbursement to participants
Responsible for data querry resolution
Assist in the identification and resolution of issues associated with the conduct of clinical research in collaboration with the other study staff, clinicians, external investigators, external sites and collaborators
Development of mechanisms which support adequate recruitment rate for these clinical studies
Identification of barriers to adequate study recruitment in close collaboration with study investigator and develop improved strategies.
Perform any other duty assigned by the PI or Project Leader.

Qualifications and Competencies
Diploma in Nursing/comprehensive
Degree in Nursing
Short courses on research methods, GCP training, counselling
Diabetes training
At least 3 years’ experience in clinical and research setting
Experience working in Diabetes or related research setting
